Fishing the OG1: Weight, Planer, or Downrigger?

1/25/2017

Someone emailed a great question yesterday about fishing the OG1: They asked if it could be fished without weight; and, if so, how deep would it dive?

First: The OG1 does require weight, a planer, lead-core line, or a downrigger to be fished. (You won't obtain the proper action if you attempt to fish it alone.)

So, the depth that you obtain is a function of your weight, the design of your planer, the number of colors of lead=core line that you've let out, or the depth of your downrigger ball.

That said, we've fished the smaller versions (from 2.8" down) with a single 1/6th ounce split shot on lakes in Eastern Washington when the trout are near the surface. (If you fish with a split shot, attach it at least 18 inches ahead of the lure.) And, instead of trolling, when we attach a split shot, we've had success casting the lure towards structure where the fish are feeding.

While you can cast the smaller OG1s, our typical strategy is to troll them when trout fishing the lakes. And, we'll attach anywhere from 1/2 ounce to 2 ounces of lead above the lure.

When trolling for salmon out of Sekiu or Westport, we've either fished the OG1 behind a Luhr Jensen Deep Six, or, a downrigger.

(Appreciate the question; and, the interest folks are showing in the lure!)

Good fishing!
